The Good Life

by Johnson Bowie
We all have a picture of what “the good life” looks like to us, an idea of the end goal we want to achieve. And even though each of us has many aspirations, we all have an ultimate treasure. It may be marriage, children, career advancement, or the longing for eternity with the Creator of heaven and earth. Whatever it is, we subconsciously make decisions based on that vision, including how we spend our money. So, what are you working toward? What does “the good life” mean to you? Tune in as we examine what it is that we truly treasure and learn how to put our money toward what God loves!
Sermon Notes

Matthew 6:19-21 ESV
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Luke 12:20-21 NIV
“’You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?’ This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.

Getting God’s Mind on Money

  1. We all have a TREASURE we’re living toward.

TELOS // an aim, an end goal, an ultimate destination

“I cannot answer the question, ‘What ought I to do?’ unless I first answer the question, ‘Of which story am I a part?’” — Alasdair MacIntyre

Getting God’s Mind on Money

  • Our HEART follows our treasure.

Matthew 6:21 ESV
“For where your TREASURE is, there your HEART will be also.”

The things we do also do something to us, too.

Getting God’s Mind on Money

  • Each of us has TWO BANK ACCOUNTS.

Matthew 6:19-20 ESV
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

Malachi 3:16 NLT
Then those who feared the Lord spoke with each other, and the Lord listened to what they said. In his presence, a scroll of remembrance was written to record the names of those who feared him and always thought about the honor of his name.

“Time is short. Eternity is long. It is only reasonable that this short life be lived in the light of eternity.” — Charles Spurgeon

“You have made us for Yourself, and our heart is restless until it finds rest in You.” — St. Augustine

“Every person or thing we trust will eventually fail us except Jesus. Only He can bear the full weight of our hope.” — John Piper

Father, we confess we haven’t been good stewards of the resources You have given us. We have spent our money on lesser things, which has pulled our hearts away from You. Our vision of The Good Life has been formed more by the world than by Your Word. Today we repent. We know that wherever our treasures are, there our hearts will be also. So, help us to care more about storing up treasures in Heaven than we do storing up treasures on earth. We want to care about heavenly things. We want to love You more than our stuff. So, today, we commit anew to be better stewards over the money You have entrusted to us. We commit to use our money for the better bank account—for things that moth and rust cannot destroy. May we and the world around us be better and more blessed because of how we spend, give, invest, and steward our money. In the process, form us into more loving, passionate disciples of Jesus Christ.  Help us to remember we will not only see You face-to-face one day, but we will also see all those who have been blessed by our generosity. May we never forget these things. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
