Hunger and Thirst

by Summer Bowie
We all have a deep desire in our souls to feel fulfilled in life, and Jesus told us that we will experience His blessing when we seek righteousness above all else. But we live in a world that craves many things, where people look for happiness in power, love, and wealth, to name a few. So, where does a hunger and thirst for righteousness lead us? Tune in to learn how Jesus fills us completely and leaves us fully alive!
Sermon Notes

Matthew 5:6 (NIV)
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.”

Blessed - (makarios): Happy, fortunate

Matthew 6:31-34 (NIV)
31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Hunger - (peinaō): desire strongly

Thirst - (sipsaō): desire strongly, a figurative extension of a spiritual need that God can satisfy

Psalm 42:1 (NIV)
As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.

J.N. Darby “To be hungry is not enough; I must be really starving to know what is in His heart toward me.”

Hungering and Thirsting for Righteousness creates:

  1.  A DESIRE to be right with God.

Hungering and Thirsting for Righteousness creates:

  1. A Desire to be right with God.

1 Peter 1:14-16 NIV
14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.

Hungering and Thirsting for Righteousness creates:

  1. A Desire to be right with God.
  2. A Desire to be FREE from Sin.
  3. A Desire to be Holy.

1 John 1:5 (NIV)
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

John 6:37 (NIV)
37 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away.

John 6:35-38 (MSG)
35-38 Jesus said, “I am the Bread of Life. The person who aligns with me hungers no more and thirsts no more, ever. I have told you this explicitly because even though you have seen me in action, you don’t really believe me. Every person the Father gives me eventually comes running to me. And once that person is with me, I hold on and don’t let go. I came down from heaven not to follow my own agenda but to accomplish the will of the One who sent me.

Following Jesus is the best decision we could ever make, but it comes with a cost. When we live like Him, we will face persecution from our family, friends, and the rest of the world. Tune in to learn why we’re blessed even amid persecution and find encouragement to continue being the salt and light of the world!
