Prophets & Promises

by Johnson Bowie
Many Christians set aside the four weeks leading up to Christmas to celebrate Advent. It’s a time of remembrance and…
Sermon Notes

ADVENT // Latin: Adventus; Greek: Parousia = Arrival or Coming
Genesis 3:15 NIV
“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your
offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his
heel.”
Luke 24:27 NIV
And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them
what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.
1 Peter 1:10-12 NIV
Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that
was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest
care, trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit
of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the
Messiah and the glories that would follow. It was revealed to them
that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of
the things that have now been told you by those who have preached
the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels
long to look into these things.
Genesis 22:18 NIV
“… through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed …”
Genesis 49:10 NIV
“The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from
between his feet, until Shiloh comes; and to Him shall be the
obedience of the people.”
Micah 5:2 NIV
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the
clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over
Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”
Hosea 11:1 NIV
“ … out of Egypt I called my son.”
Psalm 2:7 NIV
He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father.”
Daniel 7:13 NIV
“In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a
son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven.”
Isaiah 7:14 NIV
“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin
shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”
Isaiah 9:6 NIV
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government
will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor,
Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Isaiah 53:3-6 NIV
He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and
familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was
despised, and we held him in low esteem. Surely he took up our pain
and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God,
stricken by him, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our
transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that
brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. We
all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own
way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:9 NIV
He had done no wrong and had never deceived anyone. But he was
buried like a criminal; he was put in a rich man’s grave.
Psalm 16:10 NASB
For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; You will not allow
Your Holy One to undergo decay.
Matthew 1:1-6, 15-16 NIV
Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac the father of Jacob, Jacob
the father of Judah and his brothers, Judah the father of Perez and
Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, Perez the father of Hezron, Hezron
the father of Ram, Ram the father of Amminadab, Amminadab the
father of Nahshon, Nahshon the father of Salmon, Salmon the father
of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose
mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse, and Jesse the father of
King David. David was the father of Solomon… Elihud the father of
Eleazar, Eleazar the father of Matthan, Matthan the father of Jacob,
and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was
the mother of JESUS who is called the Messiah.
1 Peter 1:18-20 MSG
It cost God plenty to get you out of that dead-end, empty-headed life
you grew up in. He paid with Christ’s sacred blood, you know. He
died like an unblemished, sacrificial lamb. And this was no
afterthought. Even though it has only lately—at the end of the
ages—become public knowledge, God always knew he was
going to do this for you. It’s because of this sacrificed Messiah,
whom God then raised from the dead and glorified, that you trust
God, that you know you have a future in God.
Philippians 1:6 NLT
I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will
continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ
Jesus returns.
Mark 11:24 NIV
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you
have received it, and it will be yours.”
1 John 1:9 NIV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our
sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
John 8:36 NIV
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.”
Isaiah 26:3-4 TLV
“You keep in perfect peace one whose mind is stayed on You,
because he trusts in You. Trust in Adonai forever, for the LORD
Adonai is a Rock of ages.”
