Let’s Talk About Sex
Genesis 2:18-25 NIV
The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make
a helper suitable for him.” Now the Lord God had formed out of the
ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought
them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the
man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave
names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild
animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the Lord God
caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping,
he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh.
Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of
the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now
bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father
and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
- God created sex for marriage.
con·sum·mate: make (a marriage or relationship) complete by
having sexual intercourse
1 Corinthians 6:18-20 ESV
Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is
outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his
own body. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy
Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,
for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. - God created sex for procreation.
Genesis 4:1 ESV
Now Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain,
saying, “I have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.”
Genesis 4:17 ESV
Cain knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch.
Genesis 4:25 ESV
And Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his
name Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring
instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”
Jeremiah 1:5 ESV
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were
born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” - God created sex for oneness.
• Marriage reflects the relationship of the Holy Trinity.
Genesis 1:27 NKJV
So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He
created him; male and female He created them.
• Marriage reflects the relationship of Christ and the Church.
Ephesians 5:31-32 ESV
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to
his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is
profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. - God created sex for pleasure and delight.
Proverbs 5:18-19 ESV
Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, a
lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with
delight; be intoxicated always in her love.
1 Corinthians 6:16-20 MSG
There’s more to sex than mere skin on skin. Sex is as much spiritual
mystery as physical fact. As written in Scripture, “The two become
one.” Since we want to become spiritually one with the Master, we
must not pursue the kind of sex that avoids commitment and
intimacy, leaving us more lonely than ever—the kind of sex that can
never “become one.” There is a sense in which sexual sins are
different from all others. In sexual sin we violate the sacredness of
our own bodies, these bodies that were made for God-given and
God-modeled love, for “becoming one” with another. Or didn’t you
realize that your body is a sacred place, the place of the Holy Spirit?
Don’t you see that you can’t live however you please, squandering
what God paid such a high price for? The physical part of you is not
some piece of property belonging to the spiritual part of you. God
owns the whole works. So let people see God in and through your
body.
Love desires to satisfy others at the expense of self.
Lust desires to satisfy self at the expense of others.
Any sexual relationship that doesn’t reflect Christ will ultimately reflect
something broken.
