Attentiveness

by Colleen Rouse
We are living in a world where a lot of people feel lonely and unwanted, wondering if they even matter. But we have the opportunity to Be Like Jesus, to meet people where they are and let them know they are seen and valued. Jesus noticed the people who others missed, those who were often pushed aside. The enemy’s goal is to discourage and distract us from paying attention to what truly matters, but there are small things we can do to reflect the light of our Savior. You never know how one encounter can shift someone’s life. Find out how to grow in your attentiveness in part three of our current series.
Sermon Notes

The most meaningful way that Jesus impacted the lives of people was through His attentiveness.

The most meaningful thing we have to give to others is our attention.

Every day there is a potential of an encounter with the one if I am attentive like Jesus.

Attentiveness (def): observant care; consideration; act of directing the mind to an object; being interested and mindful of others

How to Grow in Our Attentiveness:

1. Be Aware

Ephesians 5:15-17 NLT

So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly, but understand what the Lord wants you to do.

Matthew 6:6 MSG

“Here’s what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so you won’t be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense his grace.”

How to Grow in Our Attentiveness:

2. Be Appreciative

“The greatest gift that we can give one another is rapt attention to one another’s existence.” — Sue Atchley Ebaugh

How to Grow in Our Attentiveness:

3. Be Affirmative

Ephesians 4:29 NLT

Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

Colossians 4:5-6 NLT

Live wisely among those who are not believers, and make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.

Matthew 5:14-16 TPT

“Your lives light up the world. For how can you hide a city that stands on a hilltop? And who would light a lamp and then hide it in an obscure place? Instead, it’s placed where everyone in the house can benefit from its light. So don’t hide your light! Let it shine brightly before others, so that your commendable works will shine as light upon them, and then they will give their praise to your Father in heaven.”

As Christ’s followers, we’re not just living life but sharing a message. Jesus was bold. When it comes to being like Him, it’s our responsibility to help people make the connection between the life we live and the God we serve. Jesus has called us to reconcile people to Him and not repel them from Him. They won’t know the Good News of His love, peace, and joy unless we tell them. God will be with us as we go. So, let’s do it!

Before Jesus left the earth, He set an expectation for His followers to live according to His example. When we represent Christ well, we give others the opportunity to experience His true nature and draw closer to Him. Compassion is one of the characteristics that attracts people to God. It is looking beyond our own needs to see the needs of others, learning to value them above ourselves. Let’s begin to engage the world with hearts of compassion and demonstrate the love of the Father to everyone we encounter.
