Washing Away the Darkness

by Johnson Bowie
IMMERSED: to be completely involved, absorbed, or engrossed in something; to be fully submerged, completely covered.
Sermon Notes

IMMERSED: to be completely involved, absorbed, or engrossed in something; to be fully submerged, completely covered.

John 3:16-21 NIV
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son. This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what they have done has been done in the sight of God.

The Truth About Our Lives
1. We are born IMMERSED in the DARKNESS

John 3:19 NIV
This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but people loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil

Galatians 5:19-21 NLT
When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God.

John 3:20 NIV
Everyone who does evil hates the light and will not come into the light for fear that their deeds will be exposed.

“An atheist can’t find God for the same reason a thief can’t find a policeman.”
* C.S. Lewis

The Truth About Our Lives
1. We are born IMMERSED in the DARKNESS
2. We are born again to be IMMERSED in the LIGHT
2 Corinthians 4:6 NIV

For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.

Colossians 1:13-14 NIV
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

The Truth About Our Lives
1. We are born IMMERSED in the DARKNESS
2. We are born again to be IMMERSED in the LIGHT
3. Baptism is the OUTWARD SIGN we’re living in the LIGHT

John 3:22 NIV
After this, Jesus and his disciples went out into the Judean countryside, where he spent some time with them, and baptized.

Baptizo = To plunge, dip, or IMMERSE

Colossians 2:12 NLT
For you were buried with Christ when you were baptized. And with him you were raised to new life because you trusted the mighty power of God, who raised Christ from the dead.

Maybe you made a decision to follow Jesus today, or maybe you’re curious what life with Him is all about. Wherever you are on your journey, we invite you to share with us so we can help you discover your next step.

If you're familiar with the Bible, John 3:16 is probably a verse you recognize—arguably the most famous verse in all of Scripture. But it's tempting to let a well-known verse like this grow cold. Today, we tear it wide open. God's love isn't what the world calls love—it's agape: unconditional, sacrificial, and active. A love so wonderfully extravagant that it moved Him off the throne of Heaven and onto a cross to suffer for you and save you.

Jesus didn't come to make bad people good. He came to bring dead people to life. Nicodemus was a religious teacher—a man who had studied God his entire life. But when he came to Jesus, he discovered that knowledge about God and knowing God are two very different things. In this sermon, we explore what it actually means to be born again and why the life Jesus offers is unlike anything we could ever understand or achieve on our own.
