The Miracle in the Margin

by Curvine Brewington
At some point in your life, you’ve likely heard the phrase, “Time is a gift.” But have you ever felt like you just didn’t have enough of it? How we manage time can either delay our destiny or propel us into our purpose—and God, in His kindness, has given us the beautiful gift of seasons to help us steward it well. He has written every chapter of our stories and already knows the end from the beginning and all the in-between. Time doesn’t stop and seasons are inevitable, but one thing is for sure: nothing is a surprise to God. Some seasons are expected and predictable, while others are abrupt and unprecedented. No matter what you may face in the tension of each transition, moment by moment, you can trust that God is always leading the way and extends His hand to meet you right where you are. Listen in as we celebrate the God of more than enough, who does miracles in the margin and makes everything beautiful in its time!
Sermon Notes

Genesis 8:22 NIV
“As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease."

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 NLT
For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.
A time to be born and a time to die. A time to plant and a time to harvest.
A time to kill and a time to heal. A time to tear down and a time to build up.
A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance.
A time to scatter stones and a time to gather stones.
A time to embrace and a time to turn away.
A time to search and a time to quit searching.
A time to keep and a time to throw away.
A time to tear and a time to mend. A time to be quiet and a time to speak.
A time to love and a time to hate. A time for war and a time for peace.

The DECISIONS you make TODAY will shape the world that you live in TOMORROW.

WE HAVE TO DISCERN THE TIMES.

Luke 12:54-56 NLT
Then Jesus turned to the crowd and said, “When you see clouds beginning to form in the west, you say, ‘Here comes a shower.’ And you are right. When the south wind blows, you say, ‘Today will be a scorcher.’ And it is. You fools! You know how to interpret the weather signs of the earth and sky, but you don’t know how to interpret the present times.

1 Chronicles 12:32 NLT
From the tribe of Issachar, there were 200 leaders of the tribe with their relatives. All these men understood the signs of the times and knew the best course for Israel to take.

Daniel 2:20-21 NIV
“Praise be to the name of God for ever and ever; wisdom and power are his. He changes times and seasons; he deposes kings and raises up others. He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning.”

2 Kings 4:1-2 NIV
The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, “Your servant, my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the Lord. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves.” Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?” “Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a small jar of olive oil.”

If you’re taking notes today, you can title this message, THE MIRACLE IN THE MARGIN.

With Every New Season Comes:

1. NEW VULNERABILITIES

a. THE ENEMY IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY OFFENDER.

2 Kings 4:1 NLT
… “My husband who served you is dead, and you know how he feared the LORD. But now a creditor has come, threatening to take my two sons as slaves.”

* SOMETIMES THE ENEMY IS THE INNER-ME.

Proverbs 14:12 ESV
There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death.

* MY DISOBEDIENCE CAN AFFECT MY LINEAGE.

2 Kings 4:2 NIV
Elisha replied to her, “How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?”

2. NEW OPPORTUNITIES

Exodus 4:2-4 NLT
Then the LORD asked him, “What is in your hand?” “A shepherd’s staff,” Moses replied. “Throw it down on the ground,” the LORD told him. So Moses threw down the staff, and it turned into a snake! Moses jumped back. Then the LORD told him, “Reach out and grab its tail.” So Moses reached out and grabbed it, and it turned back into a shepherd’s staff in his hand.

2 Kings 4:3-4 NIV
Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.”

3. NEW RESPONSIBILITIES

James 2:26 NLT
Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.

New Responsibilities:

1. COVERAGE
2. COMMUNITY
3. COMMUNION

James 4:8 NIV
Come near to God and He will come near to you.

4. CAPACITY

2 Kings 4:3-7 NIV
Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.” She left him and shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. When all the jars were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another one.” But he replied, “There is not a jar left.” Then the oil stopped flowing. She went and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left.”

Psalm 91 NLT
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: He alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.

Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night, nor the arrow that flies in the day. Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness, nor the disaster that strikes at midday. Though a thousand fall at your side, though ten thousand are dying around you, these evils will not touch you. Just open your eyes, and see how the wicked are punished.

If you make the Lord your refuge, if you make the Most High your shelter, no evil will conquer you; no plague will come near your home. For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go. They will hold you up with their hands so you won't even hurt your foot on a stone. You will trample upon lions and cobras; you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!

The Lord says, "I will rescue those who love me. I will protect those who trust in my name. When they call on me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble. I will rescue and honor them. I will reward them with a long life and give them my salvation."
