New Spirit
Ezekiel 36:26-27 NLT
And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take
out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. And I
will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to
obey my regulations.
John 3:3-6 NLT
Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see
the Kingdom of God.” “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How
can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?” Jesus
replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being
born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the
Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life.”
Three-Fold Nature of Man:
1 Thessalonians 5:23 NLT
Now may the God of peace make you holy in every way, and may your
whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless until our Lord Jesus Christ
comes again.
BODY – SOUL – SPIRIT
- THE BODY: (SOMA) physical part of your being; the FLESH, which has
an ongoing appetite for sin; MORTAL/TEMPORAL
James 4:1 NKJ
Where do wars and fights come from among you? Do they not come from
your desires for pleasure that war in your members?
Romans 13:14 NKJ
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to
fulfill its lusts.
1 Corinthians 9:17 NKJ
For if I do this willingly, I have a reward; but if against my will, I have been
entrusted with a stewardship. - THE SOUL: (PSUCHE) mind, will and emotions; the center where we
process all our thoughts, feelings, emotions, and decisions
Romans 12:1-2 NLT
And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to
God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy
sacrifice – the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship
him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God
transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you
will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. - THE SPIRIT: (PNEUMA) the heart of man; the central core of who a
person is; THE REAL YOU
“YOU ARE A SPIRIT – YOU HAVE A SOUL – YOU LIVE IN A BODY.”
Ephesians 4:22-24 NLT
…throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is
corrupted by lust and deception. Instead, let the Spirit renew your thoughts
and attitudes. Put on your new nature, created to be like God—truly
righteous and holy.
1 John 3:9 NKJ
Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him;
and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
Romans 7:15-25 NKJ
For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not
practice; but what I hate, that I do. If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree
with the law that it is good. But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that
dwells in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells;
for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.
For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I
practice. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin
that dwells in me. I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who
wills to do good. For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man.
But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind,
and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O
wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank
God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve
the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.
Romans 8:1-11 NKJ
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus,
who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the
law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin
and death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the
flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on
account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous
requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to
the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh
set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the
Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be
spiritually minded is life and peace. Because the carnal mind is enmity
against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So
then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the
flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone
does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. And if Christ is in you, the
body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who
raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through
His Spirit who dwells in you.
Galatians 5:16-26 NKJ
I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For
the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these
are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of
the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness,
lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of
wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness,
revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in
time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of
God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no
law. And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and
desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not
become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another
Three Ways to Develop Your Spirit:
- THE LAW OF SOWING AND REAPING
Galatians 6:7-9 NKJ
Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he
will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption,
but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. And let us
not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do
not lose heart. - THE POWER OF WORDS
Proverbs 18:21 NKJ
Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat
its fruit. - LEARNING TO YIELD TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
Romans 8:26 NKJ
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what
we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for
us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
