Gospel Goodbyes

by Johnson Bowie
Life is full of hellos and goodbyes. Hellos are often joyful because they lead to new beginnings, but goodbyes tend to leave us feeling the loss. As Christians, we have to be willing to let go of the things that keep us from doing the work the Lord has called us to do in sharing the gospel with the world. Tune in to learn more about what we have to be prepared to say goodbye to as disciples of Jesus.
Sermon Notes

Acts 11:19-20 NIV
Now those who had been scattered by the persecution that broke out when Stephen was killed traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, spreading the word only among Jews. Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also, telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus.

Acts 11:25-26 NIV
Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.

CHRISTIANOI // Greek: Belonging to Jesus, Identified with Jesus

Acts 13:1 NIV
Now in the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen (who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch) and Saul.

Acts 13:2-3 NIV
While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” So after they had fasted and prayed, they placed their hands on them and sent them off.

As Christians, we must be willing to say GOODBYE to whatever starts with MY.

Preparing to Say Goodbye
1. Say Goodbye to MY NAME

Acts 13:9 NIV
Then Saul, who was also called Paul...

1 Corinthians 9:19-23 ESV
For though I am free from all, I have made myself a servant to all, that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though not being myself under the law) that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (not being outside the law of God but under the law of Christ) that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that by all means I might save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, that I may share with them in its blessings.

Preparing to Say Goodbye
2. Say Goodbye to My Dreams & Security

Isaiah 55:8-9 NIV
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

We will never go into all the world if we don’t want to be uncomfortable.

Preparing to Say Goodbye
3. Say Goodbye to My Friends & Family

No goodbye is final in Jesus.

Romans 10:14-15 NIV
How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are SENT? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!”
