Deliver us From Evil

by Darius Dunson
Jesus knew there would be storms. He knew we would suffer and be under the threat of daily temptation. But He also made a way for us to be armed to victoriously withstand the temptations and distractions of the enemy, through prayer. Tune in as we go deeper into the final teachings of Jesus in our series, When We Pray.
Sermon Notes

MATTHEW 6:6 (NKJV)

“But you, WHEN YOU PRAY, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”

What does a consistent prayer life require?

DESIRE: God will give you a yearning and desire to pray.

DISCIPLINE: You have to act on the desire and eventually establish the discipline of prayer

DELIGHT: You have to go through the stages of Desire and Discipline to get to Delight. Delight happens when you began to see the results of what you’ve been praying for

MATTHEW 6:9–12 (NKJV)

In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven

Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.”

MATTHEW 6:13 (NKJV)

“and do not lead us into TEMPTATION, but deliver us from THE EVIL ONE…”

JAMES 1:14 (NLT)

“Temptation comes from our own desires, which entice us and drag us away.”

1 PETER 5:8–9 (NLT)

“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith…”

EPHESIANS 6:12 (NLT)

“For we are not fighting against flesh and blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.”

HOW TO CONSISTENTLY DEFEAT THE DEVIL.

  1. UNDERSTAND THE DEVIL HAS NO POWER OVER US.

COLOSSIANS 1:13-14,16 (NKJV)

“He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins… For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.”

COLOSSIANS 2:15 NIV

“And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”

EPHESIANS 1:22–23 (NKJV)

“And He put all things under His feet and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which isHis body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.”

EPHESIANS 5:8–11 (NKJV)

“For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.”

JOHN 8:44 (NIV)

“You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

EPHESIANS 4:27 (NASB95)

“and do not give the devil an opportunity.”

HOW TO CONSISTENTLY DEFEAT THE DEVIL.

  1. UNDERSTAND THE DEVIL HAS NO POWER OVER US
  2. UNDERSTAND THE WORD OF GOD IS OUR WEAPON

HEBREWS 4:12–13 (NKJV)

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”

JAMES 4:7 (NKJV)

“…submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

3 PRIMARY AREAS WHERE TEMPTATION COMES:

1. LUST OF THE FLESH

2. THE LUST OF THE EYES

3. PRIDE OF LIFE

1 JOHN 2:15-17 (NKJV)

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.  For all that is in the world—THE LUST OF THE FLESH, THE LUST OF THE EYES, AND THE PRIDE OF LIFE— is not of the FATHER but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it, but HE WHO DOES THE WILL OF GOD ABIDES FOREVER.

MATTHEW 4:3–11 (NKJV)

“Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written: ‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’ and, ‘In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the LORD your God.’ ” Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ” Then the devil left Him, and behold, angels came and ministered to Him.”

Here’s how you submit and resist:

WE HAVE TO KNOW TRUTH

WE HAVE TO PRAY TRUTH

WE HAVE TO LIVE TRUTH

MATTHEW 6:13 (NKJV)

“And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

1 CORINTHIANS 10:13 (NIV)

“No temptation has overtaken me except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful, he will not let me be tempted beyond what I can bear. But when I am tempted, he will also provide a way out so that I can endure it.”

2 CORINTHIANS 10:3–5 (NKJV)

“Though I walk in the flesh, I do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of my warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ,”

JAMES 1:12 (NLT)

“God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him.”

EPHESIANS 6:13-18 (NKJV)

“Therefore take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace, above all taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit…”
