Can I Get a Witness?

by Johnson Bowie
God has called us to open our hearts, homes and lives to love others and inspire them to know Jesus. And our testimonies are more powerful than we know! We are living examples of God’s goodness and we can share that goodness with others. We shouldn’t keep it to ourselves! In part five of our Open Doors series, be empowered to share your story for God’s glory.
Sermon Notes

Acts 1:6-8 NLT

When the apostles were with Jesus, they kept asking him, “Lord, has the time come for you to free Israel and restore our kingdom?” He replied, “The Father alone has the authority to set those dates and times, and they are not for you to know. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my WITNESSES, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

How Do I Become a Witness?

  1. Share My Story

Acts 1:8 NLT
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will BE my WITNESSES, telling people about me everywhere…”

A WITNESS is someone who communicates accurately what they have personally seen, heard, and experienced.

Acts 4:20 NIV
We cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.

Acts 22:15 MSG
You are to be a key witness to everyone you meet of what you’ve seen and heard.

1 John 1:1 NIV
That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked at and our hands have touched—this we proclaim concerning the Word of life.

John 9:25 NIV
He replied, “Whether he is a sinner or not, I don’t know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!”

John 4:28-30, 39-42 NIV
Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” They came out of the town and made their way toward him… Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman’s testimony.

How Do I Become a Witness?

  • Be Set Free from the Fear of Man

Proverbs 29:25 NIV
Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe.

John 15:18-21 NIV
If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the one who sent me.”

“I WANT you to like me, but I don’t NEED you to like me.”

  • Redefine the Win

1 Corinthians 3:6 NLT

I planted the seed in your hearts, and Apollos watered it, but it was God who made it grow.

Acts 26:17-18 MSG
I’m sending you off to open the eyes of the outsiders so they can see the difference between dark and light, and choose light, see the difference between Satan and God, and choose God. I’m sending you off to present my offer of sins forgiven, and a place in the family, inviting them into the company of those who begin real living by believing in me.
