A Man, a Woman, and a Well

by Johnson Bowie
Where do you turn when you are empty? We have countless options—social media for affirmation, our jobs for security or stability, a relationship for physical connection... In a society that encourages us to “play the game” we end up losing a lot more than we gain. In this message, learn about how Jesus seeks us out in our pursuit of satisfaction with a deep and holy solution. Are you thirsty? Tired? Come to Jesus—He is a well that won’t run dry.
Sermon Notes

"If you are a mom or have been a mother figure in someone’s life, we see you and we appreciate all you do. We have a special downloaded gift for you."

John 4:3-6 NLT
So he left Judea and returned to Galilee. He had to go through Samaria on the way. Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime

John 4:7-19, 25-29 NLT
Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food. The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?” Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.” “But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water? And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?” Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.” “Please, sir,” the woman said, “give me this water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to come here to get water.” “Go and get your husband,” Jesus told her. “I don’t have a husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said, “You’re right! You don’t have a husband— for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!” “Sir,” the woman said, “you must be a prophet... I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus told her, “I Am the Messiah!” Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked to find him talking to a woman, but none of them had the nerve to ask, “What do you want with her?” or “Why are you talking to her?” The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone, “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?”

Jesus Crosses 3 Barriers:

* Moral Barrier

Mark 2:17 NLT
“Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.”

John 4:16-18 NLT
“Go and get your husband,” Jesus told her. “I don’t have a husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said, “You’re right! You don’t have a husband— for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!”

2. “There’s a SAVIOR that came to find you.”

Luke 15:4 ESV
What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost ONE of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the ONE that is lost, until he finds it?

“Before someone can sin quietly, they must first silence the voice of Jesus in their conscience.”
-D.L. Moody

Jesus’ Healing Words for Hurting People
1. “There’s a WELL that can’t fill you.”

3. “There’s a GIFT that will change you.”

John 4:10, 13-14 NLT
Jesus replied, “If you only knew the GIFT God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water... Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”

“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us - We are far too easily pleased.”
-C.S. Lewis

John 4:28 NLT
The woman LEFT HER WATER JAR beside the well and ran back to the village...

Maybe you made a decision to follow Jesus today, or maybe you’re curious what life with Him is all about. Wherever you are on your journey, we invite you to share with us so we can help you discover your next step.

It's easy to trust God when the answers to our prayers come quickly. But what happens when we're waiting for Him to move—and nothing seems to be changing? Throughout John, we've seen Jesus perform powerful signs and wonders, from a miracle at a wedding to clearing the temple courts. Yet, one of His greatest miracles may be the one we don't immediately see. This week, we learn what it looks like to have faith in the midst of the waiting, and to trust Him through the tensions of everyday life.   Living Between the Promise and the Proof | Victory Church Pastor Andrew “Mo” Momon Scripture | John 4:43-54 June 14, 2026

We will remember the person who introduced us to Jesus for the rest of our lives. Their faith helps lead us into His presence, where our own is watered, nurtured, and strengthened until it becomes something we can truly call our own. It’s a beautiful process to behold. If we aren’t intentional though we can remain in a season that was only meant to be temporary. In this message, we explore the Father’s heart for our spiritual maturity and what it looks like to seek Him personally and develop a faith that is truly our own.
