The Path to a Glorious Life

by Johnson Bowie
Jesus came so that we could have life to the fullest, but it comes at a cost: dying to our old, sinful ways of living. Because of His death, each of us has the opportunity to experience the gift of new life in Him! In this sermon, we explore some of the major roadblocks that weigh us down and keep us from fully surrendering to Christ, and we reflect on all that we gain when we finally choose surrender. If you're struggling to give God every part of your heart and mind, or you need encouragement for the journey as a fully committed disciple of Christ, this message is for you. Sermon Notes

John 12:19-28 NIV
So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!” Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus. Jesus replied, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me. “Now my soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!”

Four Hard Things

- We DIE to self.

- We HATE our lives in this world.

- We follow Jesus to the CROSS.

- We become SERVANTS.

Four Glorious Things

- We bear MUCH fruit.

- We keep our lives for ETERNAL LIFE.

- We join Jesus in GLORY.

- The Father HONORS us.

Living for Jesus is not EASY, but it is GLORIOUS!

The Path to the Glorious Life

  1. I Die to the OLD Life.

John 12:24-25 NIV
Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and DIES, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who HATES their life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

Matthew 16:24-26 NIV
Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and TAKE UP THEIR CROSS and FOLLOW ME. For whoever wants to SAVE their life will lose it, but whoever LOSES their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”

Baptizo – to plunge, dip, immerse, or totally overwhelm

Romans 6:3 NIV
Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death?

"When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and DIE."

- Dietrich Bonhoeffer

The Path to the Glorious Life

  1. I Die to the OLD Life.
  2. I Rise to the NEW Life.

Romans 6:3-4 NIV
Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a NEW LIFE.

Jesus didn't just save you FROM something; He saved you FOR something.

The Path to the Glorious Life

  1. I Die to the OLD Life.
  2. I Rise to the NEW Life.
  3. I Live for GOD, not PEOPLE

John 12:42–43 NIV
Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for FEAR they would be put out of the synagogue; for they loved HUMAN praise more than praise from GOD.
