Humility

by Dennis Rouse
As followers of Jesus, we’re called to do more than simply say we believe in Him. We’re called to actually be like Him, to represent the essence of His kingdom in the earth. One of the core characteristics that He modeled was humility. He gave up divine privileges and lived contrary to the worldly system of that time. In this message, learn how to develop humility and follow Jesus’ lead to love others in a way that draws them closer to the Father!
Sermon Notes

“Pride and humility are the two master powers that vie for the eternal possession of mankind.” — Andrew Murray

“You will never find rest for your soul until you surrender everything that is pride in you to Jesus.” — Andrew Murray

“Humility is considered the only root from which the graces can grow, and the one indispensable condition of true fellowship with Jesus.” — Andrew Murray

“Pride must die in you or nothing in heaven can live in you.” — Andrew Murray

Psalm 138:6 NLT
Though the Lord is great, he cares for the HUMBLE, but he keeps his distance from the PROUD.

1 Peter 5:5 NKJV
Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with HUMILITY, for “God resists the PROUD, but gives GRACE TO THE HUMBLE.”

1 John 2:15-16 NKJV
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the PRIDE OF LIFE—is not of the Father but is of the world.

Philippians 2:3-9 NCV
When you do things, do not let selfishness or pride be your guide. Instead, be HUMBLE and give more honor to others than to yourselves. Do not be interested only in your own life, but be interested in the lives of others. In your lives you must THINK AND ACT LIKE CHRIST JESUS. Christ himself was like God in everything. But he did not think that being equal with God was something to be used for his own benefit. But HE gave up his place with God and made himself nothing. He was born as a man and became like a SERVANT. And when he was living as a man, he HUMBLED HIMSELF and was fully obedient to God, even when that caused his death—death on a cross. So God raised him to the HIGHEST PLACE. God made his name greater than every other name…

HUMILITY: coming to a place of complete dependence on God
PRIDE: complete dependence on self

FOUR “IN-YOUR” REALITIES:
1. IN YOURSELF YOU ARE NOTHING.

Galatians 6:3 NKJV
For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

FOUR “IN-YOUR” REALITIES:
2. IN YOURSELF YOU KNOW NOTHING.

1 Corinthians 8:2 NKJV
And if anyone thinks that he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know.

FOUR “IN-YOUR” REALITIES:
3. IN YOURSELF YOU HAVE NOTHING.

1 Corinthians 4:7 NKJV
For who makes you differ from another? And what do you have that you did not receive? Now if you did indeed receive it, why do you boast as if you had not received it?

FOUR “IN-YOUR” REALITIES:
4. IN YOURSELF YOU CAN DO NOTHING.

John 15:5 NKJV
“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.”

Humility: believing the TRUTH about YOURSELF
Pride: believing a LIE about YOURSELF

HOW TO DEVELOP HUMILITY IN YOUR LIFE:
1. LEARN TO PRACTICE “FALLING ON THE ROCK.”

DIFFERENT KINDS OF PRIDE:
* PHYSICAL PRIDE
* CULTURAL PRIDE
* EDUCATIONAL PRIDE
* ECONOMIC PRIDE
* INFLUENCE PRIDE

Matthew 21:44 NKJV
“And whoever falls on this stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

How This Looks in Your Devotional Life:
* Reading and meditating on the WORD
* Consistent PRAYER
* Keeping your heart OPEN TO GOD

HOW TO DEVELOP HUMILITY IN YOUR LIFE:
2.  INTENTIONALLY SHIFT YOUR INFLUENCE AWAY FROM YOURSELF TO GOD.

Philippians 2:5-8 NKJV
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but MADE HIMSELF OF NO REPUTATION, taking the form of a BONDSERVANT, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.

John 3:30 NKJV
“He must INCREASE, but I must DECREASE.”

John 3:30 NIV
“He must become GREATER; I must become LESS.”

1 Peter 5:6 NLT
So humble yourselves under the mighty power of God, and at the right time HE WILL LIFT YOU UP IN HONOR.

HOW TO DEVELOP HUMILITY IN YOUR LIFE:
3. PROTECT YOUR HEART THROUGH GENEROSITY.

Matthew 6:19-21 NKJV
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. FOR WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS, THERE YOUR HEART WILL BE ALSO.”

Matthew 6:24 NKJV
“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. YOU CANNOT SERVE GOD AND MAMMON.”

HOW TO DEVELOP HUMILITY IN YOUR LIFE:
4. TAKE ON THE LIFESTYLE OF SERVING INSTEAD OF BEING SERVED.

Matthew 20:26-28 NKJV
“Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave—just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
