We’re so glad that you have decided to take Communion today! Learn more about what it is and why we do it, then follow the instructions to take communion.

WHAT IS COMMUNION?

Communion is for anyone who is a follower of Jesus or who wants to become a follower of Jesus.

The Bible’s most well-known story about Communion is The Last Supper, when Jesus was eating His last dinner with His disciples before going to the cross. You can read about it in Matthew 26, Mark 14, or Luke 22.

Jesus has instructed us to take Communion regularly, as it is a time for us to reflect and examine our hearts, to remember His sacrifice, repent of the ways that we have sinned against Him, and rededicate our lives to Him. Because of Jesus’ great love for us, our relationship with God has been redeemed!

“The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my father. – John 10:17-18 NIV

HOW TO TAKE COMMUNION

THE BREAD

OPEN

Open the bread, which represents Jesus’ body, and break it in half.

PAUSE & PRAY

Pause and remember that Jesus sacrificed His body to be broken for you. Take time to reflect and examine your heart. Remember that He gave His life away so that you may be healed and made whole, not only in relationship to God but also in your body.

EAT

Eat the bread.

Pray: God, just as I have taken the bread and it is beginning to flow through my body, I believe that the healing power that is in the broken body of Jesus is also in me. I speak to every disease and injury, and I say it can no longer remain. I am healed and whole in my spirit, mind, and body. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.

Jesus took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it… saying, “Take this and eat it, for this is my body.” – Matthew 26:26

THE CUP

OPEN

Open the cup, which represents Jesus’ blood and the New Covenant. Under the Old Covenant, people had to offer animal sacrifices, but Jesus came as the final sacrifice so our sins could be forgiven once and for all! His blood washes away sin, but we have to repent for our sins and surrender our will and our lives to Him.

PAUSE & PRAY

If you are already a follower of Jesus, or if you would like to place your faith in Him, pray this prayer of surrender, repentance and forgiveness: Jesus, thank You for Your new covenant. Thank You for Your blood. I admit that I am/was a sinner. I repent of those sins. I invite You to come into my heart and wash them away. I surrender my life to You. In Your name I pray. Amen.

DRINK

Drink the cup.

“… this is my blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many.” – Matthew 26:28

Closing Prayer: Lord, I thank You for Your broken body that heals me and Your shed blood that cleanses me and makes me new. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
